Azadi (Single)

Résumé

“Azadi est le titre d’ouverture et le premier extrait de mon nouvel album studio Skin in the Game. Le mot Azadi signifie « liberté » en Urdu. J’aime beaucoup ce mot parce qu’il sonne comme un prénom universel, qui n’a pas de genre à l’oreille et qui pourrait très bien convenir à une femme comme à un homme. Je pourrais très bien donner ce nom à ma fille ainsi qu’à mon fils et leur souhaiter d’être aussi libre que le vent. J’ai voulu depuis longtemps dédier un morceau à Aisha Karefa-Smart, la nièce de James Baldwin, que je considère comme ma sœur. Avec James Baldwin j’ai enregistré l’album A Lover’s Question en 1986 et il a été comme un père adoptif pour moi. J’ai habité chez lui à Saint-Paul-de-Vence en France ainsi qu’à New York aux États-Unis et sa famille est en quelque sorte devenue comme ma propre famille. Le texte de ce morceau peut être considéré comme politique si on veut le lire et le comprendre ainsi, il s’inscrit parfaitement dans l’époque que l’on vit actuellement. Chaque phrase peut être lue et écoutée comme une observation du monde qui nous entoure. Azadi est un titre lumineux qui insiste sur le fait que dans la société d’aujourd’hui, plutôt que d’avoir de l’espoir, il vaut mieux avant tout « être » un espoir. ”

“ Azadi is the opening title of my upcoming album Skin in the Game. Azadi means « freedom » in Urdu. I particularly love this word for it sounds like a beautiful universal name while not being gender-linked to my ears. I could give both my son and my daughter this name to bear to honor and wish them to be as free as the wind. For a while now I’ve been wanting to dedicate a song to Aisha Karefa-Smart, who is James Baldwin’s niece and who’s like a sister. With James Baldwin I’ve recorded A Lover’s Question back in 1986 and he was like an adoptive father. I’ve lived with him in Saint-Paul-de-Vence as well as in New York and his family over the years has become like extended family. The lyrics to Azadi are as political as one wants them to be and understood in that way, for one is interested to delve into the situations linked to this day and age at all. During bleak times such as the ones we are living in, every line can be read and heard as a reflection of the world that surrounds us. This song is full of light and energy so to express and insist on the fact that to live in this world, instead of having hope, we need to « be » a hope in the first place. ”
