Résumé
Plusieurs générations d’auditeurs à travers le monde ont en mémoire quelques-unes des chansons les plus fameuses dont Nat King Cole nous a laissé des enregistrements inoubliables, Unforgettable, justement mais aussi Mona Lisa, Smile, Blue Gardenia, Ballerina et tant d’autres… Le présent coffret reprend évidemment ces titres. Cependant il est également destiné à rappeler, ou à faire découvrir, au-delà de l’extraordinaire velours de sa voix, la vraie dimension d’un artiste qui était bien plus qu’un « simple » crooner. Le roi Nat Cole comptait en effet parmi les grands hommes du piano de jazz, un maître qui a laissé son empreinte sur la plupart de ses pairs.
Si dans le premier CD on entend le chanteur populaire accompagné par divers orchestres, il est au piano tout au long des deux autres ; chantant à la tête de son trio dans le deuxième, exclusivement instrumentiste dans le troisième, selon divers formats du trio au grand orchestre.
Cette sélection de plus de 60 titres et son livret ont été concoctés par Claude Carrière. Producteur d’émissions de Jazz sur France Musique de 1974 à 2008, auteur de nombreuses éditions phonographiques, journaliste, conférencier, pianiste amateur, il est aujourd’hui Président d’Honneur de l’Académie du Jazz et Président de la Maison du Duke.
